Jia Yi Gu
I am a Los Angeles-based architectural scholar, curator, and designer whose research explores the materiality of buildings and the history of cultural techniques in architecture. I develop research and curatorial projects, publications, and programs about architecture and its wide-ranging practices.

As an architectural historian, my research examines materials as sites of empirical-knowledge production in twentieth-century architecture—the testing protocols, mock-ups, and experimental infrastructures through which architects and industry established authority over unfamiliar building materials. My dissertation-related work focuses on modeling, mock-ups, and material testing practices in the office of Eero Saarinen and Associates.
I’m Assistant Professor of Architecture in the Department of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts at Harvey Mudd College and one-half of the architecture and research studio Spinagu. For over a decade, I served as director and curator of two small and unusual architecture institutions MAK Center for Art and Architecture at the Schindler House and Materials & Applications, a Los Angeles-based project space for experimental architecture. I am a Board member of the Feminist Center for Creative Work.
In 2024, I co-directed the Getty PST ART project Material Acts, an interdisciplinary research initiative, exhibition, publication, and symposium exploring material experimentation in design and architecture at the intersections of architecture, craft, and science, presented at Craft Contemporary. I am co-curator of the exhibition Unknowing Los Angeles, a history of postmodern Los Angeles architecture with Gary Riichirō Fox and Aurora Tang. Alongside my historical scholarship, I work with, support, and advocate for small art and architecture organizations. I’m working on The Institution is a Proposition, a publication on the mission, histories, and labor economies of small and unusual architecture institutions.

My work has been generously supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, Getty Foundation, California Council of Arts, Canadian Center for Architecture, and the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.

Major Repairs Major Repairs is a conference addressing reparative practices, bringing together historical and reflective perspectives on the architectural and spatial responses to wildfire. Speakers and participants will elaborate on the new systems, practices, and habits needed to survive the ecological consequences of 20th-century modernist and postmodernist experiments. From the documentary history of fire management to alternative development models, from bioregional material inventories to feminist ethics of care, Major Repairs addresses the current rebuild efforts by centering non-extractive architectural perspectives and ideas.

	Entourage

Entourage presents the work of contemporary architects who confront and expand the ways bodies serve as units of measure for architecture. The exhibition centers research-based practices and projects across multiple sites: in people drawn by architects, within the political space of restrooms, and through the commercial fixtures of our daily lives. The exhibition presents works and documentations by MOS (Michael Meredith and Hilary Sample), Your Restroom is a Battleground (Matilde Cassani, Ignacio G. Galán, Iván L. Munuera, Joel Sanders), and Strat Coffman.

	Subject Studies

Subject Studies is an annual program series offering practical and non-practical public engagements. Subject Studies’ inaugural 2022 theme, Reorientations, directs perspectives and questions towards MAK Center’s own institutional habits, routines and practices. With the backdrop of the roof restoration of Schindler House, Reorientations seeks opportunities to reorient our own institution through perspectives of care, repair and transformation.

	Privacies Infrastructure

Why do our neighborhoods look the way they do? Through temporary installations, workshops, performances and public programming, Privacies Infrastructure investigates the physical culture of privacy and privatization through the language of fences, hedges, window gratings and security gates.

At the Seams: 5-Over-1 Housing in Chinatown
At the Seams: 5-Over-1 Housing in Chinatown responds to the Los Angeles housing crisis by soliciting new propositions for housing density and multi-family living in Los Angeles, in association with a study on alternative ownership-models and financing. Establishing an approach that will expand a disciplinary interest in architecture to the fields of real estate and alternative financing, the studio will explore the problem of affordable housing with two propositions in mind: an address of housing through its social, political and economic conditions while also confronting the ubiquity of one-plus-five construction in Los Angeles (the default construction type for mid-rise residential housing).

	Architecture and Media

While the term media typically conjures images of screens, electronic circuits, and machinic devices, this course understands media in relation to a specific set of practices that architects engage in: writing, drawing, transporting, typing, accounting, scanning, quantifying, computing and interfacing. Media systems construct specific forms of knowledge, embody historical and political ideologies, and shape human agency, relationships, labor, value systems, and thought. By examining how architecture's relationship to media extends beyond “new” objects, tools, and technologies, we construct an understanding of how media determines procedures, processes and practices inside and outside architecture.
